Monumen Ingatan (Memorial Monument) is an exhibition that referred to the previous 6 months research that focus on the mapping of traditional Chinese tomb (bong pay) around Semarang city. The exhibition will invites 6 artists / art collectives to collaborates, responds, visualize, re-imagine, and experiment their ideas based on the research data that have been written.

Bong pay is considered to be important representation of family generation, cultural background, traditions, economic background, the history of the city, and even the connection to the local policy

Reflecting on the under-preservation of the scattered bong pay in Semarang, this research is intended to save this important historical heritage. This is especially true considering that many of these tombs are threatened with extinction, largely because they have been mixed with residential areas or public facilities.

This initiative not only preserves the tombs but also completes the puzzle of Semarang’s history, particularly the Chinese contribution and the traces we can trace through the bong pay.

Semarang, as a city founded by the Dutch East Indies government, still needs a solid foundation to solidify its identity. This project aims to contribute to the aforementioned findings and complement the archipelago’s cultural heritage.
